Ica is located 303 kilometers from Lima, a city surrounded by beautiful valleys, famous for its vineyards and an excellent quality wine production. Other important cities are Chincha, Pisco, Nazca and Palpa.

Paracas men practiced skull trepanation alive, using special knives made of obsidian, and developed gratefully in textile art. Nazca culture succeeded because of their outstanding knowledge of hydraulic engineering, building underground canals supported by stone walls and huarango roofs.

Ica is well known for being the region of sand and sea, oasis and valleys. Apart from the pisco, wine and popular worship to Lord of Luren or Yauca Sanctuary.

Main Turistic Attractions
  • Nazca Lines, 145 kilometers south from Ica. Fields of approximately 500 square kilometers where you can find the mysterious lines discovered in 1927 and that can only be seen from the air. They represent pictures of different animals like de ant, the monkey, the dog, the lizard, the condor and the bird. The dimensions vary between 15 and 300 meters each one.
  • Paracas National Reserve. In the province of Pisco. It extends over 335 thousand acres and the purpose is to protect and take care of many animals that may become extinct. Between them we can find the sea wolf, seacat, Humboldt penguin, the flamenco or parihuana, the turtle, many sea birds and fish and dolphins. From Paracas neighbourhood you can go to Ballestas islands, Rocky Mountains that contain many sea animals.
  • Huacachina Lake. Located 5 kilometers from the downtown. Is a perfect oasis, surrounded by dunes and palms. Is a unique landscape. The water in the inside has many healing properties to skin diseases.
  • Vista Alegre Vineyards. Founded in 1857 by Picasso brothers. Is one of the biggest vineyards in the country, famous for the great quality wine production and pisco puro from Ica.
  • Tacama Vineyard House. Centre of wine production of the same name, awarded internationally.
  • Ica Regional Museum. Contains a great collection of fosils, mummies and Paracas clothes, Nazca ceramics, colonial and republican pieces.
  • Cabrera museum. Exhibits important samples of graved stones with scenes of primitive life that summarize the origin of civilization before the Inkas Empire.
  • Merced Church. Located in Plaza de Armas. It has a typical colonial architecture with a beautiful carved altar decorated with gold.
  • Viceroy's houses. Like Marques de Torre, very beautiful in the Main Square and Mendiola House in Bolivar street.
  • Inca Achirana. Irrigation canal 500 years old. According to the legend, Inka Pachacutec ordered this construction like a love proof to a young lady from the city.
  • Cachiche. Ancient curanderos or wizard town that part of Ica tradition. Surrounded by huarango trees and datil palms that give them a mystery atmosphere.

  • Weather: Sunny and warm throughout the year.
  • Temperature: From 80 to 60 ºF – from 27 to 15ºC approximately.
  • Raining season: Almost none.
Typical Dishes and Drinks

The main dishes of the region are:

  • Pallares: a long pea and very delicious prepared stewed and marinated with chilli.
  • Morusa: mashed pallares with beef or pork.
  • Picante de pallares: stewed pallares with milk, eggs and fresh cheese.
  • Carapulcra: dried boiled potato and stewed with pork and hen, chilli and irasol, garlic and other spices.
Holydays
  • March. Vendimia festivity. Festivity for grape harvest and good wine. Ornamental car parade, wine show, handicraft, commerce and industry. Horse’s competition, roster fight, wines and piscos. National and foreigners shows.
  • Holy week. Churches receive de population that visits them to show their devotion to Christ suffering. Lord of Luren image goes throughout the dark city.
  • 10 to 20 June. Ica main week celebrating a new foundation anniversary.
  • Second week in July. Nazca tourist week, with ceramics fair, industry, commercial and agricultural shows. Roster fights.
  • August 15. Orange festival in Palpa.
  • September 1 to 12. Typical celebration for Guadalupe Virgin in Nazca. Procesiones, celebrations, fire works, ceramics shows.
  • First week in September. Remember Don Jose de San Martin Expedition in Pisco with several festivities.
  • October 6 to 20. Lord of Luren festivity. Religious festivity that starts the first Thursday of the month, finishing the third Monday of the month.
  • Last week in October. Touristic week in Chincha. The city foundation is celebrated with a ceramics show, commerce, competitions an artists presentations.
